End Poverty Day

17th Oct. 2022

Lesson and Action

End Poverty Day is Mon. 17th October and this year’s theme is: RESPECTING THE DIGNITY OF ALL HUMANITY

Poverty is local and worldwide, is man-made and will take people like you to help end it. Here’s how you can help:

Do the following lesson and take the suggested actions adjusted to your class and your school and SHARE your actions on your school’s notice board, website or social media platform.

Lesson:

Respecting the Dignity of All Humanity

Curriculum area: SPHE, English, Religion, Ethical Education or SESE.

  1. Introduction: Teacher led: Look at the poster (above) and discuss the meanings of the words and the content of the picture. (A larger version of the picture in the poster can be seen below)
  2. Pupils work: Copy or design your own poster with a similar theme: Respecting the Dignity of All Humanity.
  3. Class or school Action: Bring your class, with their pictures/posters (on a march) to another class or a simple assembly and have your pupils Show, Chant or Explain their work and the theme of Respecting the Dignity of All Humanity. You may do this with the class next door or with the whole school. Make the lesson and follow-up action your own and possibly SHARE your actions on your school’s notice board, website or social media platform.
  4. Follow-up work: Check out
    Global Citizenship School,
    Other Lessons,
    Teaching Resources,
    Teaching Supports or

Resources

Concern has produced a nice resource that has plenty of extra content as it explores in greater detail the issue of poverty and Global Goal 1 No Poverty (SDG#1). The content can be adapted as per requirement and is an excellent supplement to the work begun.

Autumn 2021 Action

As we head towards COP26 in early November, we have decided to incorporate our End Poverty Day actions into our COP26 contribution here
(since updated for COP27).

We have prepared a specific lesson on Climate Change and Extreme Poverty here.

This poster comes as an insert in the InTouch INTO Teachers Magazine Nov-Dec Issue Here. On pages 10 and 11 of this issue we have published an article “Climate Justice and the young Activist – an intergenerational approach.”

Autumn 2020 Action

LEAVE NO-ONE BEHIND is our annual 17th October action based on the United Nations END POVERTY DAY.
The aim is to ERADICATE EXTREME POVERTY.

Poverty is not natural — it is a man-made infliction on millions of people worldwide, including those living in the wealthiest nations such as Ireland and the U.S.A.
Currently, there is enough food to feed our planet’s 8 billion people, yet almost one billion people are living in extreme poverty or dying from a lack of one basic meal per day.

Our END POVERTY DAY 2020 message is:

“#LeaveNoOneBehind”

Do the lesson, take one photo of your pupils’ ideas (templates provided), and email it to us at
info@GlobalCitizenshipSchool.ie
for wider distribution.

You can also SHARE by posting your photo using the hashtags below:

Change cannot happen unless we first envision a better world and then do something about it!
